Alserkal’s January Artist Takeover, Exchanges, features 15 ‘stations’ placed throughout the Avenue. Each station, mounted against the corrugated or concrete walls, includes a walkie-talkie, a speaker, and a list of 6 to 7 existential, surreal questions. The station invites any passerby to ask one of the listed questions into the walkie-talkie to either find a fellow passerby across the avenue who replies, or into the ether and perhaps, then, to themselves. A speaker in each station recites the same questions asked and answered by 100 people previously recorded in the Avenue.
This project plays with the laws of chance, and provokes a change in the conventional way one engages with brief encounters, and even ourselves. It provides the opportunity to share with a stranger a thought, experience or feeling, stirred by somewhat humorous, ethereal, random and existential questions.
Discover layers of the sound installation in a talk with the artist Sara Naim in The Majlis (Warehouse 58) on 20 January.
