Join Alserkal Avenue Programming for Art101 as we uncover the art world and the stories behind it. Art101 is a series of talks that go behind the scenes to help people understand the art world better. Each talk will address specific aspects of the art world, covering a wide range of subjects, from the role of galleries, institutions, to art appreciation, collecting, and more. Each month, Art101 will invite a different member of the UAE's arts community to offer unique insight. Presented in a simple moderated style, each session will allow you to interact and engage with the speakers.

THE CULTURAL PRACTICIONER: ON REPRESENTING THE UAE AT THE VENICE BIENNALE
Moderated by: Fiza Akram
Laila Binbrek, Coordinating Director of the National Pavilion UAE, discusses the UAE’s participation in the Venice Biennale, one of the most important international, cultural moments. Since the UAE’s first participation in 2009, the National Pavilion UAE has contributed significantly to the UAE’s arts and architectural dialogue with thoughtfully curated exhibitions that represent the UAE on the international stage. This conversation will discuss the significance of the Biennale and the importance of the UAE’s participation in building its reputation as a rapidly developing cultural centre. Laila will also cover the 2017 exhibition, ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors: Positions in Play’, curated by Hammad Nasar, which explores the theme of playfulness across generations of UAE-based artists, and will touch on the Pavilion’s internship programme.
