Ammar Al Attar
Plaza Cinema is a new work by Ammar Al Attar, in which the artist recreates thirty movie posters from a decommissioned theater in Dubai. These 1970s posters feature hand-drawn images from the films, and stylized text alternating between Hindi, Arabic and English. The posters point to the importance and widespread popularity of film to the Indian diaspora and its ability to connect people working in the UAE with the narratives and images of home. This is the first part of a two-part commission that will culminate in a presentation by the artist in March 2017.
